Serve Your Data to the Public
Send us your quality GIS-related data and for a nominal fee, we will add it to the GIS Data Depot download catalog. Once your data is catalogued simply link the page on your site and direct interested parties to that location.
Serving your data at the GIS Data Depotä and GeoCommunityä is a great way to distribute your data to the public without having to deal with the expensive and burdensome system administration issues associated with establishing or maintaining a web server (hardware, software, and Internet bandwidth). Nor will you have to deal with the issues associated with writing CDs, such as writing the data, keeping inventory, shipping and handling, or collecting payment.
Why Recreate the Wheel?
There is a vast amount of useful, copyright-free GIS data sitting on backup tapes, hard drives, and CDs worldwide; yet organizations new to GIS continue to spend the majority of their GIS implementation budgets on GIS data. Until now, there has not been a way for organizations to "share the wealth" without going broke trying to re-distribute their data. Today, all you have to do is send your data to us and we'll share it by making it available through the GIS Data Depot and GeoCommunity.
Once data is added to the GIS Data Depot, it will be available worldwide for download free of charge. In addition, for those individuals who may not have the Internet bandwidth or the time to download large files, the GIS Data Depot provides an automated mechanism (patent pending) for creating custom GIS Data CDs, which may include the data you provide bundled with other useful datasets. For the CD write service, the GIS Data Depot will charge a nominal write fee intended to cover the associated production and distribution costs.
How to Participate in the DataServe Program
In order to serve data within the GIS Data Depot:
1. EMAIL us at data@geocomm.com describing the data you wish to provide to the public.
2. COMPRESS the data that you wish to provide to the public using either gzip for unix based data or WinZip for Windows based data. Please do not use the self-extracting *.exe format for PC data.
3. METADATA - Prepare and provide a metadata or readme file to be included within each and every catalog item. The inclusion of a metadata file outlining the processes used to generate the data, perceived level of data quality and accuracy, intended uses, and other pertinent information that will ensure that users of your data are informed about the data.
