Layer Name: Managed Areas

Coverage Name: MANAGE

Layer Type: Polygon

Geog. Extent: Main Hawaiian Islands, except Kahoolawe and Niihau

Projection: Universal Trans Mercator, Zone 4

Description: Managed areas (e.g. refuges, preserves, etc.) for islands of Kauai, Oahu, Maui, Molokai, Lanai and Hawaii. Such areas include, but are not limited to, private and public wildlife refuges, preserves, sanctuaries and reserves. Also includes state forest reserves and some state parks. This layer prepared for use by the Office of State Planning for the Land Use District Boundary Review.

Source: Primarily from the USGS 1:24,000 Digital Line Graphs( DLGs). Some boundaries were extracted from the 1976 1:100,000 GIRAS coverages. Others were digitized from a variety of source maps provided by DLNR Division of Forestry and Wildlife, The Nature Conservancy, and other State agencies. Private parcels (exclusions) not shown on USGS quad maps or included in the 1983 DLG layers were drafted and digitized using the 1989 Reddy Tax Map Key books.

History: Digitized and extracted using Arc/Info version 6, ArcEdit module, by the Office of State Planning (OSP) from various sources described above.

Note: This layer was prepared in part for the Office of State Planning's (OSP) 1991 Native Ecosystems and Rare Species Workshops and the Land Use District Boundary Review report.

A "managed area" was defined by OSP as an area that was being managed to protect its biological resources under legal mandates and authority, or through management plans and activities. The data includes boundaries of national wildlife refuges, national parks, state forest reserves, natural area reserves, marine life conservation districts, wildlife sanctuaries, plant sanctuaries, selected state parks and privately owned or managed preserves.

Most state parks and game management areas are not included because these areas require further investigation and boundary delineation. Game management areas have since been digitized and are in a seperate layer.

The managed area boundaries, specifically those of the state forest reserves, natural area reserves and marine life conservation districts are preliminary in nature. See the State Department of Land and Natural Resources, Division of Forestry and Wildlife for more information.

For more complete layer documentation, please see FGDC compliant metadata, in file manage.meta.
