1. IDENTIFICATION INFORMATION

1.1 CITATION (8.1) ORIGINATOR: Illinois State Museum (8.2) PUBLICATION DATE: 1994 (8.4) TITLE: Digital file name is - ARCHMOD Data set title is - Archaelogical resource potential in Illinois

1.2 DESCRIPTION 1.2.1 ABSTRACT: 1. IDENTIFICATION This coverage depicts areas believed to possess a high archaeologic potential. It was developed by the Illinois Sate Museum and is intended for coarse regional analysis. The nominal map scale is 1:500,000 with a positional National Map Accuracy Standard value of 832 feet. Note however that the nature of the boundaries themselves, approximate limits of archaeologic potential, make specific statements of positional accuracy unimportant.

Background - The Illinois State Agency Historic Preservation Act (P.A. 86-707) mandates state government to preserve, restore, and maintain the historic resources of the state. Activities that can result in change of historic properties undertaken, supported or administered by a State agency are subject to review by the Illinois Historic Preservation Agency (IHPA). The IHPA also regulates private undertakings which require a permit from a State agency. Private undertakings that will affect a documented archaeological site or an area with a high potential for archaeological resources, must inventory and assess the scientific and historic potential of archaeological and historic properties within the project area. The Illinois State Museum (ISM) is responsible for preparing maps illustrating areas with a high probability for archaeological resources.

Based on the statewide distribution of documented archaeological resources, a high probability area "means any occurrence of Cahokia Alluvium, Carmi Member of Equality Formation, Grayslake Peat, Parkland Sand, Peyton Colluvium the Batavia Member of the Henry Formation, or the Mackinaw Member, as mapped by Lineback et al. (1979) at a scale of 1:5000,000 within permanent stream floodplains and including: 1) 500 yards of the adjoining bluffline crest of the Fox, Illinois, Kankakee, Kaskaskia, Mississippi, Ohio, Rock, and Wabash Rivers and 300 yards of the adjoining bluffline crest of all other rivers or 2) a 500 yard wide area along the shore of Lake Michigan abutting the high water mark."

The Archaeological Resource Potential map is a combination of administrative, geology, and hydrology GIS data sets. The county boundaries of Illinois (ILLIMAP - A computer-Based Mapping System for Illinois, D.H. Swann, P.B. DuMontelle, R.F. Mast, L.H. Van Dyke; Illinois State Geological Survey Circular 451; 1970; 24 pages) serves as a base map. All processing was done at the county level. The geological information is from Quaternary Deposits of Illinois (Lineback, J.A. 1979, scale 1:500,000). ISM staff redigitized all of the quaternary deposits specified by the law. Hydrology information is derived from the USGS 1:100,000 DLG files (Standards for Digital Line Graphs, 1987, USGS).

The coverage, a map of each county, contains polygons with a single attribute called HIGHPROB. A value of 1 indicates an area of "high archaeological resource potential"

The steps taken in deriving the boundaries of high potential areas are as follows. 1) The extent of the seven quaternary deposits mentioned above were hand-digitized by ISM personnel from Lineback (1979) from county size tiles that had been photo enlarged to 200 percent, making as effective digitizing scale of 1:250,000. 2) Hydrology was clipped fro the 1:100,000 USGS DLG data and permanent streams, wide streams, and shorelines were extracted. All ponds were then removed to produce a simple line coverage. 3) The boundaries of Cahokia Alluvium were used to simulate the bluff edge. 4) Those portions of Cahokia Alluvium associated with one of the 8 large rivers mentioned in the bill were extracted 5) The Cahokian Alluvium was buffered by 500 meters near the big rivers and 300 meters elsewhere. 6 ) A buffer of 300 yards was produced around all permanent streams not associated with Cahokia Alluvium on the Lineback map. 7) A small amount of edgematching was done at county boundaries, although some discrepancies still exist. 1.2.2 PURPOSE: To determine the probability of a high achaelogical resource area.

1.3 TIME PERIOD OF CONTENT (9.1) SINGLE DATE/TIME (9.1.1) CALENDAR DATE: 1994 1.3.1 CURRENTNESS REFERENCE: Historic site map 1.4 STATUS 1.4.1 PROGRESS: Complete. Data set is complete in that the entire state is included. However, this map is a model of archaeological resource potential, not a map of a tangible resource with known boundaries. Clearly some areas with resource potential are not included, rather this maps reflects the definition prescribed by law. 1.4.2 MAINTENANCE AND UPDATE FREQUENCY: none planned
