1. IDENTIFICATION INFORMATION

1.1 CITATION (8.1) ORIGINATOR: Illinois Department of Natural Resources (8.2) PUBLICATION DATE: 1994 (8.4) TITLE: Digital file name is - RAILS Data set title is - Railroads both active and abandoned

1.2 DESCRIPTION 1.2.1 ABSTRACT: Active and Abandoned Railroads at 1:100,000 for all of Illinois and portions of surrounding states. Derived from the US Geological Survey 1:100,000 Digital Line Graph files, transportation layer. Publication dates of the USGS maps used as sources range from 1980 to 1986. Data were recoded to reflect ownership, use by AMTRAK and active/abandoned status as of January 1991. Sidings and yards are included. The maximum estimated error in horizontal position based on National Map Accuracy Standards is 167 feet. 1.2.2 PURPOSE: These data are appropriate for use in local and regional thematic analysis involving railroads. Data are not appropriate as a geodetic or engineering base.

1.3 TIME PERIOD OF CONTENT (9.1) SINGLE DATE/TIME (9.1.1) CALENDAR DATE: 1980-1991 1.3.1 CURRENTNESS REFERENCE: Publication date of sources 1.4 STATUS 1.4.1 PROGRESS: No statement of completeness was provided with the original USGS DLG data. Visual inspection and use suggests that coverage is comprehensive but reflective of the date of source map publication date. This date varies across the state. All railroads contained in USGS 1:100,000 DLG files are included. These data were corrected and updated as of 1991. They are complete but do not show all abandoned railroads or trails. Some trails are contained in the roads layer from the same source. 1.4.2 MAINTENANCE AND UPDATE FREQUENCY: irregular
