FGDC-Compliant Metadata for WELLS95
1. IDENTIFICATION INFORMATION
1.1 CITATION
(8.1) ORIGINATOR: Sally Denhart, Illinois State Geological Survey
(8.2) PUBLICATION DATE: 199512
(8.4) TITLE: Digital file name is - WELLS95
Data set title is - Wells and Borings in Illinois
1.2 DESCRIPTION
1.2.1 ABSTRACT: This point data set shows the locations, well type, and
well ID for over 370,000 wells and borings in Illinois. Data
comes from driller's logs, engineering boring logs, etc. This data set
includes well data available in the computer data files of the Illinois
State Geological Survey (ISGS) as of December, 1995. These data are
appropriate for use in local and regional thematic analysis. Data are
not appropriate as a geodetic or engineering base. Some locations are
not field verified. The ISGS maintains an archive of well data for the
State of Illinois, which includes data that have been computerized
from records submitted to the ISGS under regulatory programs of the
State. State permits to drill mineral borings, structure borings,
coal borings, oil and gas wells, enhanced oil recovery wells, service
wells, water wells, waste disposal wells and gas storage wells, are
issued by the Illinois Department of Mines and Minerals. Permits for
water supply wells are issued by the Illinois Department of Public
Health and county health departments. Permits are not required for
engineering borings, which are voluntarily submitted to the ISGS by
the Illinois Department of Transportation, industry, and others.
This data set contains a very limited subset of attributes (well type,
location, and identifier). There are over 25 other attributes for each
well in the complete data set although records are not complete for all
types of wells and borings. For additional attributes or assistance
refer to the Contact Information contained in this document.
Records of wells drilled in Illinois are on file and open to the
public in the Geological Records Unit of the ISGS, Champaign.
Illinois Oil and Gas Development maps, updated periodically by the
ISGS, show greater detail for oil and related wells in the
oil-producing regions of the state.
1.2.2 PURPOSE: Well and boring data is useful for numerous geologic,
hydrologic, and environmental applications. The ISGS maintains
detailed digital and paper records for over 420,000 wells and
borings in Illinois. This data set demonstrates well density in
the state, and allows users to identity wells and borings for
which detailed information may be requested.
