New GIS web: Using GIS architecture to play
Metadata: Identification_Information: Citation: Citation_Information: Originator: United States Geological Survey Publication_Date: 1996 Title: Ozark Aquifer Description: Abstract: These digital maps contain information on the altitude of the base and top, the extent, and the potentiometric surface of the Ozark aquifer in Kansas. The Ozark aquifer consists of weathered and sandy dolomite and limestone of Ordovician and Cambrian age and includes the Arbuckle Group. The digital map was developed from 1:500,000- and 1:1,000,000-scale source information. The altitude for the base and top contour interval is 100 feet. The potentiometric surface contour interval is 50 feet. Purpose: These digital maps were developed to be part of a multi-layer digital data base for the major aquifers in Kansas. Potential uses of these digital maps include: studies addressing the location, quantity, quality, use, management, and protection of ground-water resources in Kansas. They are not intended for use in detailed, site-specific investigations. The databases are evaluated based on questions similar to the following:

Does the database's documentation properly explain the dataset? Does the data import properly into its native dataset environment? Is consistent methodology used throughout the data? Are all of the database's fields and values legitimate compared to the documentation? Is the database's topology free of errors that could impair the functionality of the data?

Once the data is tested a report is written describing the evaluation. A copy of the report is then forwarded to the data originator for his/her review. If errors are found, the data originator is expected to make any necessary corrections and then provide those corrected coverages. After these steps have been taken data is considered archivable and made available for distribution. Data that is archived by DASC has been tested and corrected. After modification, the map was transferred to dimensionally stable mylar at a scale of 1:500,000 and converted to digital form by manually digitizing the contour map into the Lambert Conformal Conic projection (with the parameters that were approved as a standard by the Kansas State GIS Policy Board) using the ARCEDIT subprogram of ARC/INFO. The root mean square error (RMSE) for this procedure was 0.003 (about 0.003 inch at the scale of the original map or about 40 meters on the ground). The RMSE is within the suggested National Map Accuracy Standards of the USGS of 0.002 inch at the scale of the original map (Nebert, 1989). Process_Date: 1995 Process_Step: Process_Description: The boundary of the Ozark aquifer in this study is the location at which the water's dissolved-solids concentration equals 10,000 milligrams per liter (mg/L), which is the limit for usable water as defined by the State of Kansas (Kansas Statutes Annotated 55-150 (h); Kansas Department of Health and Environment, 1987). Additionally, this digital map includes the 1,000-mg/L line which is the limit for fresh-water.

Insufficient recent (1990 or later) water-quality data for the Ozark aquifer were available to delineate the 10,000-mg/L boundary line. Most water-quality samples from the Ozark aquifer were collected and analyzed in 1979 through 1981. Therefore, the Ozark aquifer boundary is based mainly on 1979-81 water quality data; however, these data were supplemented with more recent data where possible and with older data where necessary. The sources of information used to delineate the Ozark aquifer boundary include dissolved-solids concentration maps (i.e., contour information) from Hansen (1991; scale 1:1,000,000) and Imes (1990; scale 1:750,000), along with dissolved-solids sample-analysis results (i.e., point data) from Macfarlane and Hathaway (1987), Spruill (1987), and the U.S. Geological Survey's (USGS) National Water Information System (NWIS). The Ozark aquifer boundary was delineated at a scale of 1:500,000. Once the boundary of the aquifer was delineated, it was transferred to dimensionally stable mylar and converted to digital form by manually digitizing the boundary into the Lambert Conformal Conic projection(with the parameters that were approved as a standard by the Kansas State GIS Policy Board) using the ARCEDIT subprogram of ARC/INFO. The root mean square error (RMSE) for this procedure was 0.003 (about 0.003 inch at the original scale of the map or about 40 meters on the ground). The oz_base.aat, oz_extent.aat, oz_potent.aat, and oz_top.aat contain two items named ALTITUDE_FEET and CODE. The oz_extent.pat has two items named TYPE and CODE item. The following is a brief definition of each item:

ALTITUDE_FEET-This item describes the altitude of the base of the Ozark aquifer (in feet; datum is sea level) for the oz_base coverage, the altitude (in feet) for the oz_extent.aat coverage, and the altitude of the potentiometric surface of the Ozark aquifer (in feet; datum is sea level) for the oz_potent coverage, and the altitude of the top of the Oark aquifer (in feet; datum in sea level) for oz_top.

CODE-This item contains a 3- or 4-digit number that indicates the type of feature represented (e.g., contour, fault, boundary), the confidence in the feature's location (i.e., approximate, inferred, speculative), and the cartographic symbol with which the feature is displayed (e.g., continuous line, dashed line) for the oz_base, oz_extent.aat, oz_potent, and oz_top coverages. For the oz_extent.pat coverage, the CODE item is used for a 1-digit code indicating the type of water quality within the polygon.

TYPE-This item contains a description of the water in terms of quality for the oz_extent.pat.
