Description:
Abstract: This database is an Arc/Info implementation of the 1:500,000 scale Geology Map of Kansas, MĦ23, 1991. This work wasperformed by the Automated Cartography section of the Kansas Geological Survey, under contract to the Kansas Water Office. The goal of this project was to capture, in Arc/Info structures, the spatial and attribute information portrayed on this map. The data for Map MĦ23 was digitized from an original paper copy publication of the Geologic Map of Kansas, Map MĦ1, 1964. That map incorporated a 1:500,000 scale, USGS base map. Because of this source and scale, there are some edge matching problems with the state boundary as maintained by the Kansas Cartographic Database (KCD). Two classes of spatial feature are represented in the Arc/Info version of the geology map: polygons depicting major geologic units, and lines demarking the bases of key geologic formations within the units.
Purpose: The purpose of this database is to make a digital representation of the Geological map of Kansas.

This data is based largely on the Geologic Map of Kansas, M-1, 1964, scale 1:500,000. Major changes in the unit
designations have been made in coordination with the Kansas Geological Survey Lexicon Committee. The top of the
Admire Group has been extended up through units previously in the Council Grove Group to the base of the Neva
Limestone. Assignment of the Admire Group has been moved from the Permian to the Pennsylvanian. As a result,
the Neva Limestone now marks the base of the Permian System. The counties affected by these changes are Cowley,
Chauatauqua, Butler, Greenwood, Chase, Morris, Osage, Wabaunsee, Riley, Jackson, Pottawatomie, Marshall,
Nemaha, and Brown. In addition numerous minor changes and corrections from the 1964 map have been incorporated
in the new 1991 map.

Logical_Consistency_Report: Datasets delivered to the Data Access and Support Center are quality assurance tested for major documentation and topological errors using macros. The databases are evaluated based on questions similar to the following: Does the database's documentation properly explain the dataset? Does the data import properly into its native dataset environment? Is consistent methodology used through out the data? Are all of the database's values and fields legitimate compared to the documentation? Is the database's topology free of errors that could impair the functionality of the data? Once the data is tested a report is written describing the evaluation. A copy of the report is then forwarded to the data originator for his/her review. If errors are found, the data originator is expected to make any necessary corrections and then provide those corrected coverages. After these steps have been taken data is considered archivable and made available for distribution.

Entity_and_Attribute_Overview: Each polygon coverage has an associated PAT and AAT. One additional table,FORMATIONS, exists to hold the geologic information, such as formation/unit names, geologic age, rockĦtypes, etc. The PATs link the spatial, polygonal data to the information kept in the FORMATIONS table by a common item, FORMĦID. The AATs hold a "feature code" for the arcs that comprise the polygons of each coverage; the principle usage for this information is cartographic. All 105 of the PATs/AATs have an identical form.
