Abstract: The Kansas Cartographic Database (KCD) is an exact digital representation of selected features from the USGS 7.5 minute topographic map series. Features that are captured include: county boundaries, township boundaries, section corners, major transportation, railroads, and principle hydrology. Major transportation and principle hydrology are defined as those features that are found on the official USGS 1:500,000 state map. It represents the general hydrologic and transportation network in Kansas. More detailed hydrology (all streams and lakes) is available but has not been converted to Arc/Info. This can be requested through KGS. The data was captured using in-house software titled GIMMAP. It was imported into Arc/Info using the generate format and then cleaned or built. It was designed to be a cartographic database for use on state and county map production.
Purpose: Kansas Cartographic Database was designed for use with KGS is in-house mapping program. It was created and used strictly within GIMMAP to meet the map production demands for KGS. The data is a exact copy of the USGS 7.5 minute quadrangle. No edge matching was performed between quadrangles.

Datasets delivered to the Data Access and Support Center are quality assurance tested for major documentation and topological errors using macros. The databases are evaluated based on questions similar to the following:
Does the database's documentation properly explain the dataset? Does the data import properly into its native dataset environment? Is consistent methodology used throughout the data? Are all of the database's fields and values legitimate compared to the documentation? Is the database's topology free of errors that could impair the functionality of the data? Once the data is tested a report is written describing the evaluation. A copy of the report is then forwarded to the data originator for his/her review. If errors are found, the data originator is expected to make any necessary corrections and then provide those corrected coverages. After these steps have been taken data is considered archivable and made available for distribution. Data that is archived by DASC has been tested and corrected.
