The conservation/public lands data layer describes parcels of lands which because of conditions of ownership of federal, state, or local government, conservation organization, or other entity, in fee simple or less than fee, e.g. conservation easement, are essentially protected from being developed.

The data layer presently contains all federal and state owned lands, as well as all parcels protected under the Land Conservation Investment Program (LCIP). Efforts are now underway to incorporate additional town and conservation organization lands. A major revision of the data layer is expected to be available in early summer, 1995.

The data development has relied on several sources, including the USGS Digital Line Graphs (1:24,000 scale) parcel boundaries, Society for the Protection of NH Forests records, as well as original deeds and tax maps. Parcel boundaries were compiled on 1:24,000-scale, mylar quad overlays in preparation for automation.

Polygons are coded with a polygon id (PID), which links to an attribute table (CONSnnn.ADF) containing a number of descriptive attributes, including grantee, managing agency, level of protection, date of acquisition, and program under which parcel was acquired.
