Digital Well Location Data Files
Disclaimer
The information contained in the accompanying digital well location files has not
been fully reviewed for accuracy and conformity with present Ohio Geological
Survey standards for published or open-file materials. The Ohio Geological
Survey does not guarantee these files to be free from errors, omissions, or
inaccuracies and disclaims any responsibility or liability for interpretations or
decisions based thereon.
Notice:
The accompanying well location data files are the first release from a long-term
project to convert Ohio's oil and gas well data to digital format. Problems exist in
these files concerning well permit numbers. This is due to the variability in the
methods that have been used over time to issue permit numbers and other types
of well identifiers in Ohio. Therefore, a number of different types of well ID's will
be found in the accompanying files. Duplicate permit numbers may also be
found within a given county.
Over the next year, the Divisions of Geological Survey and Oil & Gas will be
working to assign well identifiers to all Ohio wells following the American
Petroleum Institute's standards for numeric well codes. Until this work is
complete, it may not be possible to use the data, as released, to create a unique
index of well numbers for Ohio.
File Format
The well data files were created in Microsoft Access v.7.0. All files have an
extension of .DBF. These files can be read directly by most common PC
database management programs (e.g. Dbase, FoxPro, Paradox) and by many
popular spreadsheet programs (Excel, Lotus, Quattro Pro).
Update Frequency
The well location files will be updated periodically over the next few months
depending upon well drilling and completion per township/county. Keep a record
of the file dates that you download to compare to later versions.

Export fields from Digitized well spot maps.
PERMIT
Permit number associated with the well. It can include regular permit numbers issued by the
Division of Oil and Gas, old "A" permit numbers issued by the Division of Mines before 1965,
Pepper numbers, "D" permit numbers, "L" permit numbers, and other assorted numbering
schemes. It can also include permit numbers that start with OCI - NNNN. These are
temporary permit numbers assigned by the contractor to those wells that either have an
unknown or uncertain permit number. These temporary numbers will be used to identify
wells whose permit numbers need to be resolved or assigned new permit numbers in those
instances where they do not have a permit number.
TYPECODE
Code used to identify the type of permit number. Below is the list of typecodes:
R = Regular permit numbers issued by the Division of Oil and Gas since 1965
A = Permit number issued by the Division of Mines before 1965.
D = Permit numbers assigned to unpermitted wells for a specific Ohio Geological Survey
project prior to 1965.
L = Permit numbers assigned to unpermitted wells for a specific Ohio Geological Survey
project prior to 1965.
P = Pepper numbers. Numbers assigned to unpermitted wells by the U.S. Geological
Survey for the Clinton sandstone and Berea Sandstone studies.
U = Wells which have unknown permit numbers. They are assigned OCI or MCI numbers.
CELLNAME
Well Symbol. The list of well symbols is located below:
WELLB = Permitted location.
WELLH = Expired permit location.
WELLE = Gas show.
WELLS = Gas well.
WELLF = Plugged gas well.
WELLG = Gas and oil show.
WELLJ = Plugged gas and oil show.
WELLO = Oil show.
WELLR = Oil well.
WELLT = Plugged oil well.
WELLN = Gas well with oil show.
WELLU = Oil well with gas show.
WELLX = Plugged oil well with gas show.
WELLV = Oil and gas well.
WELLY = Plugged oil and gas well.
WELPN = Plugged gas well with oil show.
WELLW = Dry hole.
WELLK = Dry hole with gas show.
WELLL = Dry hole with oil show.
WELLM = Dry hole with oil and gas show.
WELLD = Injection well.
WELLP = Plugged injection well
WELLQ = Plugged water well. The well was originally drilled for petroleum.
WELLZ = Well producing oil and gas from two or more horizons.
WDHPS = Plugged well that produced gas from two or more horizons.
WEDHN = Well producing gas with a show of oil from two or more horizons.
WEDHS = Well producing gas from two or more horizons.
WEDHR = Well producing oil from two or more horizons.

WDHPR = Plugged well that produced oil from two or more horizons.
WEDHU = Well producing oil with a gas show from two or more horizons.
WDHPN = Plugged well that produced gas with a oil show from two or more horizons.
WELPZ = Plugged well that produced oil and gas from two or more horizons.
STARR = Unknown status.
CELORG_X
X coordinate of the well, in Ohio State Plane Coordinate System. Please refer to the county
to determine the Ohio State Plane Coordinate System Zone
CELORG_Y
Y coordinate of the well, in Ohio State Plane Coordinate System. Please refer to the county
to determine the Ohio State Plane Coordinate System Zone
MAPNAME
The graphics file in which the well is located. The first three numbers of the file name
correspond to the API county code and the second four numbers correspond to a township
coding scheme that is used by the Ohio Geological Survey. This township-coding scheme is
located in the Survey's DDF3 data files. An example of map name is below:
1330110.wel = this is the graphics file name in which the well is located. 133 corresponds to
Portage County and 0110 corresponds to AURORA township.
PDFM1
A field generally used to display the first producing formation. It is also used as a general
text field for such items as Lost Hole (LH), SWIW, along with any other text that appears
around a well.
PDFM2
A field generally used to display the second producing formation. It is also used as a general
text field for such items as Lost Hole (LH), SWIW, along with any other text that appears
around a well.
IPOIL
Initial production of oil.
IPGAS
Initial production of gas.
