Oregon Watersheds GEOSPATIAL METADATA

1.0 IDENTIFICATION INFORMATION 1.1 Citation Title (Theme Name): Oregon Fifth Field Watersheds (polygon) Resource Description (Theme Abbreviation): ORWATER Originator: Regional Ecosystem Office Publication Date: 1997-07-1

1.2 Description Abstract: This theme contains polygons of 5th field watersheds in Oregon. For the first time a consistent, wall-to-wall set of watersheds (5th field) which nest within established USGS mapping of hydrologic units (4th field) exists for all of Oregon. The attributes for this theme are listed in the Entity/Attribute Section but generally include the USGS number and names for each field (1st field through 5th field) for each mapped polygon.

Purpose: The theme was created to support land management planning and information sharing on federal and private lands in Oregon. A consistent set of 5th field watersheds will facilitate and standardize activity information reporting and allow for standardized means to quantify effects of land management activities.

1.3 Time Period Covered Beginning Date: January 1, 1996 Ending Date: Unknown Currentness Reference: This is the first draft of the watershed theme. A revision to this theme will be completed by October 1, 1996 to correct errors in linework and attribute information.

1.4 Status Progress: Partially complete. Watershed Names have been attributed for most fifth fields on the Westside and is currently being validated. Maintenance and Update Frequency: After the October 1, 1996 update, future updates are expected to be infrequent and irregular. Last updated June 1997.

1.5 Spatial Domain North Bounding Coordinate (Latitude): 46.5 degrees South Bounding Coordinate (Latitude): 41.5 degrees West Bounding Coordinate (Longitude): -124.5 degrees East Bounding Coordinate (Longitude): -116 degrees

1.6 Access Restrictions: This watershed theme is discretionary; contains no sensitive information. 1.7 Use Restrictions: None 1.8 Point of Contact (Data Steward) Contact Person: Dale Guenther Contact Position: GIS Administrator Contact Organization: Regional Ecosystem Office Contact Physical Address: 333 SW 1st Contact Mailing Address: PO Box 3623 Contact City: Portland Contact State: Oregon Contact ZipCode: 97208 Contact Voice Telephone: (503) 808-2188

2.0 DATA QUALITY INFORMATION 2.1 Attribute Accuracy Attribute Accuracy Report: The attributes for 1st field through 4th field polygons are from the USGS mapping of hydrologic units. They have been tested by manually comparing the USGS theme to this watershed theme. Fifth field watershed numbering follows USGS conventions by adding a numeric two character code to the 4th field coding. This draft release contains watershed names for most BLM and USFS (those listed Below) fifth fields with updates in progress.

2.2 Logical Consistency Logical Consistency Report: All polygons close. No duplicate features exist in the theme. The southern boundary of the theme edgeties to the California Department of Forestry CALWATER GIS theme. The east boundary edgeties to the Interior Columbia Basin Ecosystem Management Project watersheds which were captured at 1:100,000 scale.

2.3 Completeness Report Completeness Report: All 5th field watersheds have been mapped throughout Oregon. This theme used existing 1:24,000 mapping by Forest Service and BLM where possible. In areas where no federal lands exist ( ie: Willamette Valley and the Northwest portion of Oregon), watershed boundaries were digitized from USGS 1:24,000 quad sheets.

2.4 Positional Accuracy Horizontal Positional Accuracy Report: Delineation of watershed boundaries were manuscripted from 1:24,000 USGS map series. Fifth field watersheds nest within USGS 4th code hydrological units. Polygons for 5th fields generally range from 50k to 200k acres. Existing digital data from National Forests and BLM Districts were tested to ensure that mapping protocols were met and hard copy plots were visually compared with USGS 7.5' maps.

2.5 Lineage Source Information Data Source Citation: Existing 1;24,000 watershed coverages from the following National Forests and Bureau of Land Management Districts were used to construct this theme.

National Forest coverages: Mount Hood NF Siuslaw NF Willamette NF Siskiyou NF Umpqua NF Rogue River NF Winema NF Fremont N F

Bureau of Land Mgmt: Salem Eugene Coos Bay Roseburg Medford Klamath Falls RA Processing Steps Process Description: Existing digital watershed coverages were reviewed and corrected if necessary by an interagency team of hydrologists and gis specialists. Areas without digital water-shed information were drawn and manually digitized from contour data on USGS 7.5' paper topographic quadrangle maps. Each digital quad was then checked for position by comparing plots of the data to the source material. Digital files were edgetied and merged into the theme. Number code attributes were assigned using USGS hydrologic code information. Process Date: 1995-10
