Metadata

What follows is very detailed technical information about this data table. This is often called metadata. Metadata (or "data about data") describe the content, quality, condition, and other characteristics of data. Metadata are used to organize and maintain investments in data, to provide information to data catalogs and clearinghouses, and to aid data transfers. The Federal Geographic Data Committee (FGDC) publishes the Content Standard for Digital Geospatial Metadata. Many organizations within and outside of the federal government have adopted the FGDC metadata standard and are using automated indexing and serving mechanisms to provide access to their holdings through the Internet. Visit the FGDC Clearinghouse to learn more about how metadata is used in clearinghouses and to search for other data sets.

Description:
Abstract:
This data set includes U.S. Census Bureau population information for the United States, presented by county. Included are total population counts, various statistics on ethnic and gender distributions, and income statistics.
Purpose:
The digital data sets are used to create electronic and hard copy maps that depict various aspects of the nation. The data can be used to conduct geographic analysis on National and large regional scales. The digital data will provide a basis from which future revisions of the atlas can be derived.
Supplemental_Information:
In the online, interactive National Atlas of the United States, this file is linked to the 1990 County Boundaries file (co1990p020) for display purposes.

Process_Step:
Process_Description:
CEN1 ane CEN2 were loaded into ArcView and joined using the Areaname field. The result was exported to a new table. CEN4 was used to calculate the number of square miles in each FIPS area, and the resulting Square_mil field was added to the new table created from CEN1 and CEN2. Some field names in the table were modified and the result was exported to CEN5. In CEN5, a 5-digit FIPS field was created from the original 7-digit Stcou field, and fields were added for population per square mile, the ratio of males to females, and group population as a percentage of total population. In addition, the State FIPS code field was changed from 5-digit to 2- digit, for compatibility with other files. The fields for 1980 data were turned off, and the results were exported to ce1990t.dbf.
