Metadata for the Seismic Events Map Layer

Seismic Events: Map Layer Description File

This map layer includes a selection of seismic events above 4.0 magnitude in and near the United States for the years 1973-1998. The Seismic Events map layer was compiled by the U.S. Geological Survey from a database maintained by its National Earthquake Information Center.

The magnitude of the earthquake is a logarithmic measure of its "size." This is commonly referred to as the "Richter scale".

Metadata

What follows is very detailed technical information about this map layer. This is often called metadata. Metadata (or "data about data") describe the content, quality, condition, and other characteristics of data. Metadata are used to organize and maintain investments in data, to provide information to data catalogs and clearinghouses, and to aid data transfers. The Federal Geographic Data Committee (FGDC) publishes the Content Standard for Digital Geospatial Metadata. Many organizations within and outside of the federal government have adopted the FGDC metadata standard and are using automated indexing and serving mechanisms to provide access to their holdings through the Internet. Visit the FGDC Clearinghouse to learn more about how metadata is used in clearinghouses and to search for other data sets.

Description:
Abstract:
This data set includes a selection of seismic events above 4.0 magnitude in and near the United States for the years 1973-1998.
Purpose:
The digital data sets are used to create electronic and hard copy maps that depict various aspects of the nation. The data can be used to conduct geographic analysis on national and large regional scales. The digital data will provide a basis from which future revisions of the atlas can be derived.
Supplemental_Information:
Revisions: 1) 6/29/98 - Corrected ellipsoid name from WGS84 to GRS1980 and changed flattening ratio.

Process_Description:
The data were extracted from the NEIC Earthquake Search WWW site at: <http://wwwneic.cr.usgs.gov/neis/epic/epic.html.> The data were then loaded into an INFO database. Latitude and Longitude values were written to an external file and used as input to the ARC/INFO command GENERATE to create a point coverage. The remaining attributes were joined to the data using the command JOINITEM. A bounding rectangle was used to isolate just those earthquakes located in the area of interest, standard tics were added and point topology was build. A spot check was conducted to validate that the proper attributes were associated with the earthquake locations.
