Metadata for the Railroads Map Layer

Railroads: Map Layer Description File

This map layer includes railroads in the United States. The Railroads map layer was compiled by the U.S. Geological Survey.

Metadata

What follows is very detailed technical information about this map layer. This is often called metadata. Metadata (or "data about data") describe the content, quality, condition, and other characteristics of data. Metadata are used to organize and maintain investments in data, to provide information to data catalogs and clearinghouses, and to aid data transfers. The Federal Geographic Data Committee (FGDC) publishes the Content Standard for Digital Geospatial Metadata. Many organizations within and outside of the federal government have adopted the FGDC metadata standard and are using automated indexing and serving mechanisms to provide access to their holdings through the Internet. Visit the FGDC Clearinghouse to learn more about how metadata is used in clearinghouses and to search for other data sets.

Description:
Abstract:
This data set includes railroads in the United States.
Purpose:
These data are intended for geographic display and analysis at the national level, and for large regional areas. The data should be displayed and analyzed at scales appropriate for 1:2,000,000 data. No responsibility is assumed by the U.S. Geological Survey in the use of these data.
Supplemental_Information:
Revisions: 1) 6/29/98 - In metadata, corrected ellipsoid name from WGS84 to GRS1980 and changed flattening ratio. 2) 9/25/98 - In metadata, corrected source citation abbreviation from MM to RR. 3) 12/10/98 - In data, added name field. 4) 2/26/99 - In metadata, modified purpose statement, contacts, and distribution liability and corrected typos.

Data_Quality_Information:
Logical_Consistency_Report:
Topological requirements include: Lines must begin and end at nodes, lines must connect to each other at nodes, lines do not extend through nodes. The Arc/Info commands BUILD and CLEAN were run to ensure the topological consistency of the data set.
Completeness_Report:
Data completeness generally reflects the content of the original 1:2,000,000-scale DLG file.
